Went fishin' the other day
Sat there from sunup to sundown
"Well, how many did ya catch?"
That's what they wanted to know
when I got back to town

Now, not one of them
fish took a bite
But what could I say?
I just told them all about
"the one that got away"

I tossed that line into
the lake
Just bidin' my time
There he was....
The Granddaddy of them all
was gonna be mine

He went swimmin' by
and grabbed that hook
I had him good
He was a pullin' on that line
Just to hold him back
all my strength, it took

He was splashin' and jumpin'
I was holdin' on really tight
But, that ol' Granddaddy
was givin' it all his might

Man......
I was really excited now
What a fight....
We had a real tug-a-war
goin' on
My brow was pourin' with sweat
Here was the big moment
I almost had him in the net...

Now, I'm tellin' you the truth here
this is no joke
That dang line of mine
just went and broke

I almost had him.....
I really did
I was gonna get that ol' fish
But, he went to the bottom
of the lake and hid

Now I had to go home
"She" don't like it
when I fish all day
I'll have to tell "Her"

'bout that one that got away

She'll say, "Not a fish
on the hook
So.....
not even a fish to cook"
Then I'll just say,
"That's OK if he got away.....
"Cause the best catch of my life.....
Well, you just know it's gotta be you,
my dear sweet wife
