Desert Song
Each night in my dreams I am beckoned
by the desert to come home where I belong
and I say I am always here, can't you see me
I have simply lost my song

Each day I try to escape the loneliness
with my poetry and rhymes in my mind
but again as the night nears
alone again time after time

I've pleaded with God for an answer
I've prayed for many years
why have you left me on solitaire ground
alone with only my tears

Everything happens for a reason,
what is it, God, that you want me to see
am I supposed to continue to live
in this desert for an eternity

Then a quiet hush came from above
"Be still and listen to me
you are never alone, my child
I am forever with thee

Every grain of sand is numbered
as your days here on this earth
My child, you've not been forsaken
and to me you are of great worth

Look towards the cactus
standing strong and so straight
you are like this, my child
for now this is your calling, your fate

The desert lilies and lupine sing to the sun
the sweet fragrance of the sage placed by my hand
you've only to keep searching your heart
and you'll find this is your promised land

Be a shoulder to the lost ones
blown here from rivers of hurt so deep
listen with your heart, pray for them
as each day the sands of time creep"

Silently the night began to fall
the stars shimmering on cool desert sand
and I felt His presence so near me
no longer forsaken on barren land
He then whispered, "when you need me
just reach and take my hand"
